home -- organization and storage -- inexpensive home storage solutions

Inexpensive Home Storage Solutions

Home organization is largely, for most of us, about storage of items we don’t use year round.

Whether it be spring or winter clothing, holiday decorations, or various couch covers and curtains changed out each season, we have items that simply need to be stored when not in use.

There are many home storage solutions available, and the best ones are often expensive. However, there are inexpensive alternatives to those home storage solutions for those of us on a rather tight budget.

The best storage solution for your seasonal clothing, extra blankets, seasonal table cloths and seasonal curtains is space saver bags. These bags are water tight, and with the use of a vacuum become very small.

They are also, however, very expensive, especially if you have a large family with a lot of seasonal clothing, because it costs around twenty dollars for a couple of space saver bags. However, you can create your own space saver bags.

Buy a box of heavy duty plastic lawn trash bags, or heavy duty fifty gallon drum liners. These are typically about fifteen dollars for a box of one hundred at wholesale clubs. Place your neatly folded items in the bag, then tie off the end with a plastic zip tie (the kind you have to cut to open).

Make sure it’s tied off very tightly. Then, use your vacuum cleaner hose or dirt devil hose to suck out the extra air through the opening. Believe me, no matter how tight you tie off the bag, air will still come out. The bag will shrink down, and the opening will tighten.

Plus, the heat from the vacuum cleaner will melt the opening of the bag. While not as water proof as space saver bags, your clothing and other items will still be much more protected than if you just threw them in a trash bag and tossed them in the basement.

Another place in the home that typically needs storage is the kitchen. You never have enough cabinet space. Whether its for nicer dishes or a pantry for canned and boxed goods, there is an easy and cheep fix for this type of storage that doesn’t require any remodeling or adding cabinets.

At most department stores you can find stand alone cabinets that cost around eighty dollars. They’re not made of nice wood; they are usually particle board with laminate, like a thin countertop.

They have adjustable shelves, and can be used to store irons, ironing boards, brooms, mops, mop buckets, canned goods, boxed goods, or china. And they easily fit into any corner of your dining room or kitchen.

Look around your department stores, thrift stores, and online for more inexpensive home storage solutions. Sometimes the best alternatives for home storage solutions are in your own creativity, and some inexpensive tools.

"You've given me inspiration to start a clutter free life."

Madeleine Andersson

Just to say big thanks. I am definitely slowly making a major effort to clear...I am not tempted to even think about what I have just gotten rid of. It is a case of out of sight out of mind. Thanking you. My mind even feels more organized and it's a good feeling!

Yours faithfully,
